Make Your Own Baby Tutus

These baby tutus are so super easy to make and they come out fabulous! No-one will ever know you made it yourself unless you tell them. The project can become a bit tedious and slightly time consuming, but the end result is well worth the effort. I believe it is a stress relieving activity. The great thing is you ca work on it gradually. Put it down and pick it up again when you have time. I like to make these while I watch a program on TV while the baby is napping, or while she is content with her toys or some other activity.

Supplies needed to make baby tutus:

  • elastic - this is for the waist band of the tutu. You can use regular elastic used for sewing in waistbands. I like to buy colored hair bands. The large kind that are meant to fit on an adults head as a headband. I use these because they just plain look more polished if any of the elastic ends up showing.

  • spool of tulle - I used the 6 inch width. Use whatever size or color makes you happy!

  • ribbon - (optional) Use ribbon to tie a bow on for embellishment. It's really just a pretty way to give the baby tutus a little extra decoration. I tied ribbon around the waistband of my tutu to make it look like it was tied together.

  • flowers - (optional) rosettes, cloth flowers, bows... I used little silk rosettes and hand sewed them on here and there around the body of the tutu. Again, not necessary, but gives the tutu a really cute classy look. It reminds me of a garden fairy / ballerina.

supplies for making baby tutus Making these baby tuts is really very easy. Start by measuring your baby around the middle so you know how big the elastic waist band should be. I just wrapped the elastic around baby's waist and tied a knot where it fit snug yet comfortably. I trimmed off the edges so there was no extra elastic hanging off.

If you are making these as a gift, or for a baby that hasn't arrived yet, I would make it 12" around for a newborn and add a couple inches for larger sizes. Remember. it is elastic, so it will stretch, and baby will grow into it if it is too big.

how to make a baby tutu

Cut the tulle into long strips. Estimate how long you want the tutu to be and multiply it by two. So if you want the tutu to fall 5 inches from the waist, cut the strips to be 10 inches each. To make the tutu simply tie these strips to the elastic waistband by tying a single knot. Do your best to keep the knot exactly in the middle of the strips of tulle. Continue making knots all lined up right next to each other on the waistband until you reach the opposite side and the entire waistband has been covered with tulle. It's important that the knots all face in the same direction to keep it nice and clean looking. Otherwise it make look like it was put together messily.

Finish it off by tying a bow at the waistband. I tied mine around where I knotted the elastic. I then hand sewed the little rosettes along the body of the baby tutu keeping them spaced evenly apart.
