Make Your Own Baby Burp Cloths
Materials needed to make these burp cloths:
To make these baby burp cloths I used a decorative patterned flannel for one side of the cloth, and some terry cloth for the opposite side and for the pocket. I like to add the terry cloth because it is super absorbent and great for cleaning up messes all around. Since you somehow end up walking around with a burp cloth on your shoulder 24/7 for the first few months it really does come in handy to have it double as a towel for cleaning up any mess. You really do not need to use a pattern to make these burp cloths, although if you plan to make a whole slew of them you might find it easier to go ahead and make one. All you need to do is determine how big you want to make your burp cloths. Tape together some ordinary printer paper to create the eact dimensions, or cut one out form some newspaper. You'll need one pattern for the size of the burp cloth and one for the littl epocket to add to the end of the cloth. The pocket should be the exact same width as the pattern yet shorter. I made mine to be about 1/4 of the length of the entire cloth. Start by laying out your fabrics so that their right sides (top of fabric) are facing each other. Cut the fabric to the dimension that you want the baby burp cloths to be, adding about 1/2" inch for sewing. Also cut a piece of fabric for the pocket. Heat up your clothes iron and fold and iron a 1/4-1/2" flap over one side of the fabric for the pocket. Sew this flap down about 1/4" inch in from the edge of the fabric.
Lay the pocket in between the two fabric burp cloth pieces. If you want the pocket to be a contrasting pattern to the terry cloth then you must make sure it is facing towards the identical decorative fabric. Pin all of the fabrics in place. Sew all four edges shut leaving an opening about 2-3" inches. Trim the extra fabric from all four corners. Turn the fabric inside out and hand stitch the opening shut. Turn the pocket so that it faces outward. Now go back to your heated clothes iron and iron the baby burp cloths out so they are nice and flat at the edges. Done! These burp cloths are so simple to make. They look stylish and they're practical! Make a whole stash for yourself or even give them away as great baby gifts!
