Homemade and Natural Teething Remedies

Natural Teething RemediesThe constant drooling, sleepless nights, fevers, and suddenly your little one goes from a happy bundle of joy to a clingy and cranky grump. Baby teething is a challenge for both Moms and their babies!

But don't worry Momma! You got this! There are tricks - easy and natural ways to help ease your baby's discomfort.

Here are some of my top homemade and natural baby teething remedies, along with some shared by readers.

With some of these tips and tricks we'll have you and your baby back in track in no time. Or at least give you a chance for a shower and some "me" time!

Homemade Teethers

Baby Washcloths

One of my favorite super inexpensive and effective homemade baby teethers - the frozen baby washcloth.

You really don not have to keep to only baby washcloths, but I always preferred them to a regular washcloth because of the super soft fabric. And you get to use them as a washcloth as well so it's a dual purpose item in so many ways!

Here's what you do: Take a baby washcloth (or two) and tie it in a knot in a couple of places. Wet the cloth in some filtered water or spring water, leaving one side dry for baby to hold on to. Ring out the excess so that it's good and wet, yet not dripping. Pop it in a zip lock to keep it clean and toss it in the freezer. Come back for it a couple hours later and viola! A perfect teether for baby to chew on. It will feel nice to bite down on, provide coolness, and even sop up some of the drool. ;-)

diy wooden baby teething ringsI would recommend keeping 2 or more of these in the freezer at all times while your little one is teething, so you will always have them in rotation from freezer to baby to laundry.

Another tip:
If you wanted to go a step further, you can even try knotting the washcloth around one of these unfinished wooden teething rings.

Natural Teething Remedy Recipes

Natural Teething Liquid Recipe

This homemade and natural teething liquid is an alternative to teething gel products such as Orajel or Anbesol. The ingredients in this recipe are completely natural, yet very effective.

There have been grave warnings issued about giving teething gels whose active ingredients (benzocaine) to young children and babies. Although the numbers of those fatally injured by the gels is actually very low considering the number of people using the product, I still like to keep things really safe and natural.

The active ingredient in my teething liquid is clove oil! Cloves have been used as a natural tooth pain cure for centuries. A tried and true method that is inexpensive to replicate and easy to make as well. I like to keep mine in a little amber or cobalt tinted glass bottle with a dropper for dispensing the drops right onto the gums and rub it in with a fingertip.

Teething Drops Recipe:
* 1 tablespoon oil ( I like organic olive oil, avocado oil, or sunflower seed oil)
* 3 drops clove essential oil
* 3 drops liquid stevia (optional)

Mix all the above ingredients into a small glass bottle and give it a good shake. Make sure and taste the oil first to make sure it is not too strong tasting. I find I like to add the stevia for taste. I, myself, find the taste of clove oil to be awful and the stevia helps quite a lot to create a pleasant taste.

Homemade Teething Tablets

This is an alternative to the above recipe yet to turn the recipe into a teething tablet sort of like a Highlands tablet, yet better because it is frozen and melt in your mouth. The active ingredient is still clove oil, but mixed into coconut oil. Coconut oil is solid at room temperature. So this tablet will keep as a small drop that will go onto the gums cold (since it will be stored in the freezer) and then will melt on the area as soon as it encounters the warm gums. Mmmmm sounds so very soothing to me!

Teething Tablets Recipe
* 2 tbsp coconut oil
* 6 drops clove essential oil
* 4 drops liquid stevia

First you'll need to melt your coconut oil, but not actually heat it. Basically you just need it slightly above room temperature to bring it to it's liquid state. I just put it in a small glass bowl and placed it in some heated water for just a minute, stirring until it was all melted. I added my drops and then left the mixture to cool, making sure to stir it again every couple of minutes.

When the oil begins to solidify again use a spoon to transfer drops spaced apart onto pieces of wax paper. They won't be perfectly shaped tablets. Just drop little bits at whatever size seems like it will work well for you. Place the wax paper into the freezer for a few minutes and then transfer each tablet to a small container like a mason jelly jar or something similar. Keep these in the freezer and use when needed for soothing little one's gums.

Teething Remedy Foods

Homemade Baby Teething Biscuits

This teething biscuit recipe is one that was handed down from my mom. It was handed down to her and she used it for both me and my younger brother. These are great especially if you store them in the freezer for those especially difficult and painful days. And even better, these have almost no crumbs at all. No crumbs, no mess! Hard Teething Biscuit Recipe
* 2 eggs
* 1 cup organic cane sugar (white or brown)
* 2 1/2 cups organic flour

Break the eggs into a bowl and stir them until they are creamy. Add the sugar and continue stirring until blended.Gradually add the flour to make a stiff dough. Roll the dough out between two sheets of lightly floured wax paper to about 3/4" thickness. Cut the dough and roll it into small snake shapes (about cigar sized) to form somewhat biscotti shaped baby teething biscuits. Place the cookies on a lightly greased cookie sheet. Cover with wax paper or saran wrap and let stand in the fridge overnight (about 10-12 hours). Bake at 325 degrees until browned and hard.

Makes about 12 durable and almost crumb free teething biscuits.

Frozen Bagels

This one is sooooo easy. I do recommend using good quality bagels made organically if possible with a little ingredients as possible. At least as little of the unpronouncable ingredients as possible. ;-)

All you do is slice your bagels in half and then rip the halves in half to create half moon shaped pieces. Pop them in a freezer bag and keep them in the freezer. When baby needs something cold and soothing to chew on hand one over, It can get messy but it will keep baby happy and Iverson you a break for a while.

Frozen Fruit

The Frozen Banana

I used this remedy a lot. It doubles as a snack and my baby simply loves it. Simply take a nice ripe banana and cut it in half (do not peel it first. leave the peel intact). Insert a popsicle stick into the end. Or what I used most of the time was a baby fork. Place the banana in a zip lock freezer bag and into the freezer until frozen.

To serve the banana to your baby you will need to remove the peel. This can be a bit of a pain in the butt, but worth it. Just take a very sharp knife and slice the peel off sections. I know it sounds like it makes more sense to freeze it without the peel, but trust me, not a good idea. This completely dries it out. It's just not appetizing at all.

Frozen Fruit in a Mesh Baby Feeder

Using a mesh baby feeder opens up a world of new foods to try with your baby, and it also doubles as a great baby teething remedy. These feeders are sometimes called "safe feeders" because it gives you the opportunity to feed whole foods to your baby without the risk of them choking. It also gives them some good practice at chewing.

For a baby teething remedy simply fill the feeder with frozen fruits. My suggestions? I like to use cantaloupe, kiwi, or watermelon, to name a few. But you can cut up and freeze chunks of just about any kind of fruit to place into the mesh feeder.

Another great option is to fill it with popsicles. You can even fill it with ice cubes. I like to freeze some 100% fruit juice and place the ice cube into the mesh bags. Or try any of my homemade popsicle recipes.
